We have a family holiday coming up at the end of the month. What type of pass would we get if our plans involved visiting Nara, Kyoto and around Osaka like Universal studios etc. my family consists of 2 adults and 2 children aged 7 n 5 years old.

If you are only going around those areas, there are not many passes that can help you. While there are several passes for the Kansai area, you generally have to do a lot of traveling to make one pay off. But you might look at the Icoca & Haruka discount ticket if you are using KIX.
You also might look at a Kintetsu Rail Pass.

If you're willing to do something like a day trip to see Himeji Castle (the best in the country), and Kokoen Garden next door, then a one day Kansai Area Pass would pay off.

In Kyoto, your kids might like the new railway museum and Toei Eigamura studio.
