21 Day JR pass

Here's our intinerary. Is pass worth?
Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo(day trip)
Tokyo- Osaka
Osaka-Nara-Osaka(day trip)
Osaka-Mt Koya(Koyosan)
Mt Koya-Kyoto
Kyoto-Himeji-Kyoto(day trip)
Kyoto-Kinosaki
Kinosaki-Hiroshima
Hiroshima-Miyajima(day trip)
Hiroshima-Tokyo

I see that the Nozomi isn't eligible for JR Pass. Can I pay a fee to take it?

  • Hi,
Yes, you make a 21 day pass pay off.
You would get even greater savings though if you went from Tokyo to Kansai/Hiroshima and back within 14 days and use a 14 day pass.
For Nikko, you could use a Tobu Nikko Free Pass.

However, if you want to travel more slowly and leisurely, then as I said, the 21 day pass would still be worthwhile.
Note however that you can't use the JR Pass to get to Koyasan. For there, you can save money on a Koyasan World Heritage Ticket.

For Himeji, be sure not to miss the Kokoen Garden next to the castle. If you want to make it a full day trip, you can go up to Mt. Shosha for the large temple complex there.

For Kinosaki, you can also get a Yumepa ticket and visit as many different hot springs as you want.

Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.

On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.
