12 day trip (tokyo -> kyoto -> osaka -> kyoto -> kobe-> kyoto -> nara -> kyoto -> tokyo)

Sorry for the long title!

This is my first time traveling to Japan and as a solo traveler. I will be leaving in November so I'm not sure if this is a great time to travel or a good schedule:

The plan was to stay for a couple of days in Tokyo and Kyoto while traveling to Osaka, Kobe, and Nara without staying or checking a hotel in those places besides Tokyo and Kyoto. I'm also not sure if it would cover everything with a 7 day JR pass and I do not plan to use it until the 2nd or 3rd day after arriving to Tokyo. In other words, will a 7 day JR pass cover and give me round trips (ex: from Kyoto to Osaka then return to Kyoto)?

If you would like to leave some recommendations where to stay and go, please leave some comments and thanks for your help.

  • Hi,

    Yes, you can easily base yourself in the 2 cities and avoid switching hotels all the time. The JR pass can take you to all the places you mention, although fares between the Kansai cities is not much.
    One alternative to the Pass though is the japanican ticket and it is far cheaper for you.

    Even paying out of pocket for the trips to Kobe, Osaka and Nara, it still works out cheaper. The one exception is if you decide to go see Himeji. Then the JR Pass added value really outshines the alternatives.

    From Tokyo, seeing Nikko and Kamakura/Enoshima are 2 good day trips.

    Hope that helps.
