Is getting JR pass worth it?

Arriving on the 14 of November on Haneda airport . Staying in Tokyo until the 21, then going to Kyoto until 25 of the month. Leaving from Osaka, kansai airport.
My itinerary is
15 - Tokyo
16 - Tokyo
17 - Kamakura
18 - Tokyo ( I think the Ghibli museum is only open starting 18 of November.
19 - Mt Fuji and Hakone ( no hiking). But We want to ride the Hakone ropeway and Hakone sightseeing boat.
20. No plan yet.
21. Going to Kyoto
22. Himeji castle
23. Nagoya and Osaka. OR. Hiroshima
24. Kyoto
25. Leaving Osaka, kansai.

I am thinking to buy the monorail going to Tokyo. Buy the 2 days toei Tokyo pass from 15 and 16. Buy the 7 days pass from 17 to 23. Buy 1 day pass or 2 days pass for 24 and 25.
Can you suggest where to go on the 20th or we just split the mt. Fuji and Hakone. We just want sightseeing no hiking.
Which is better? Nagoya and Osaka. Or Hiroshima.

  • Hi,
Since you're only going one way, the 7 day pass would pay off going from Tokyo to Kansai, with the side trip to Hiroshima. The day trip to Himeji Castle (and don't skip the Kokoen Garden next door) would start to give you some good savings.
Nagoya is the most boring among all of Japan's big cities.
Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

If you want to make things even better, use the JR Pass for Nov 19-25 and then you can use the pass for the Haruka train to get to KIX. For Kamakura, use a Enoshima Kamakura Free Pass

and then you can see Enoshima too.

For Hakone, get a Hakone Free Pass

The loop course is a common way to see the area and takes a full day.

For Nov. 20 the obvious answer would be Nara, which was also a former capital and has some of Japan's top sights.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.

You can see previews of some of the best places to see in Japan on:

    Hope that helps.
