Tickets for shinkansen or other JR trains

edited October 2017 in About the Rail Pass
With the rail pass, do I still need to get tickets from the station for travel on unreserved seats on the Shinkansen as well as other JR trains?

  • Hi,

There are no tickets for traveling in an unreserved seat with the Pass. You just show the pass at the manned gate, go to the correct platform, and get in line for one of the unreserved cars. That's it.

If you want a seat reservation, they are free with the pass. You can do it in any JR office. Then they'll give you a seat ticket. If you have the time, why not take advantage of it, since it is free for you? It might be less crowded as well in the reserved seat cars.

    Best of luck.
  • Thank you ! we bought the Kansai Wide Area Pass so we understand that the reserved seats are not free.
  • OK. Actually, with the Kansai Wide Area Pass any seat reservations are ridiculously expensive - just not worth it at all.
