8 days in Japan in February

Hello everyone,

I want to know if a 7 day Japan Rail Pass would be worth buying.

Here's my itinerary:

Feb 3, 2018 - Arrive in Narita - Tokyo
Feb 4, 2018 - Tokyo
Feb 5, 2018 - Tokyo
Feb 6, 2018 - Tokyo - Osaka
Feb 7, 2018 - Osaka
Feb 8, 2018 - Kyoto
Feb 9, 2018 - Kyoto - Osaka
Feb 10, 2018 - Osaka - Narita Airport

I would have to buy a separate ticket from Narita to Tokyo as I will be using the JR pass starting Feb 4 to cover the 7 days.

Thanks in advance,

hellokitty ^ ^

  • Hi,

You have a choice, actually. Using a 7 day JR Pass for Feb 4-10, you would barely break even. Your other choice is a japanican ticket.

With the japanican ticket, you can get to Osaka at least 30 minutes faster on the Nozomi train (which you can't use with the JR Pass). Travel to/from Narita and between Osaka/Kyoto is not covered, but the ticket price is way cheaper and you'd still come out ahead. For getting to/from Narita, you can take the 1000 yen bus.

The fare between Osaka and Kyoto is only about 500 yen one way.
    So it's up to you.

While you are in Kansai, you should make at least half a day open to see Nara as well - it was also a former capital and has some of Japan's best sights. Nara is often neglected by some tourists, which is a shame. Missing the Todaiji Great Buddha would be a tragedy. Nara Park has a lot of other great places, such as Kasuga Shrine, Kofukuji Temple, and feeding the many deer in the area.
Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train if using using the JR pass.

You can see previews of some of the best places to see in Japan on:

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks so much Tenjin for your suggestions!!!
  • Does the JR pass cover train rides within Tokyo?
  • Only on JR lines, but they don't cost much anyways.
