Please see my itinerary for June 2015
1-4 June : Tokyo
4-8 June : Kyoto
8-11 June : Osaka
11-17 June : Tokyo
Our plan is to buy the 7-day JR pass, and activate it on the 4th when travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto, use it again on Kyoto to Osaka on the 8th, and return before the 7-day expiry on the 11th to Tokyo (as our flight departs from Tokyo). Is this plan feasible and cost-effective than buying single-purchase tickets?
Another section, our in-laws are having a slightly shorter itinerary.
If they are travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto and back to Tokyo, would it be better to buy single tickets (Tokyo->Kyoto & Kyoto-> Tokyo) than purchase the 7-day JR pass?

Our in-laws may go other cities if it costs a little more to have the JR pass than single trips.
