which RP should I buy?

Hi,
We´re 3 adult spending 2 weeks in Japan with the following schedule;

Arrival Tokyo Airport April 21
Travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto April 26
Travelling from Kyoto to Hiroshima May 1
Travelling from Hiroshima to Tokyo May 3 or 4
Our homebound flight from Tokyo will be either May 5 or 7

What will be the best and cheapest solution for us? A 14 days RP? or a 7 days pass combined with single tickets? Or perhaps another way to do the roundtrip so the 7 day pass is sufficient?

Thanks a lot:-)
Anni

  • Hi,
By your own counting, your long distance trips are longer than 7 days. A 14 day pass would pay off for all your trips, except either getting from or to the airport once. If you are using Narita Airport, you can activate a 14 day pass at the airport and use the Narita Express once, and for the other, the cheapest way would be the 1000 yen bus from either Tokyo Stn or Ginza.

I'd say five days in Tokyo are more than enough - if you want to increase your savings, you could take a day trip - and there are many excellent places. Your time in Japan will be perfect for seeing the wisteria, and if you have never experienced it, it is a surreal dream.

Another possibility is seeing the shibazakura near Mt Fuji 5 Lakes.

Plus there are many other great places - Nikko, Kamakura, the Hitachi Seaside Park, Hakone, Izu, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, and more.

If you are willing to cut your trip to Kyoto and Hiroshima down to 7 days, then a 7 day pass plus a Tokyo Wide Pass for the day trips would work better.

And while in Kyoto, I highly recommend you take at least half a day and see Nara - it was also a former capital and has some of Japan's top sights. Missing the Todaiji Great Buddha would be a tragedy.
And if you still have some energy after seeing Kyoto during the day, you could go see Osaka in the evening - Dotonbori has great atmosphere and food, plus the city lights from atop the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas are exceptional.
On another evening, you could also go see Kobe.

Please note that you will be in Japan during Golden Week, which is a peak travel season. I strongly recommend you make seat reservations for all your train trips - they are free with the pass.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train if you are using the JR pass.

  • Hello! I am flying in to Nagoya on March 16 and flying out from Osaka on March 22. I will be staying in Nagoya till the 18th and shall travel to Osaka on the 19th. Is there a JR pass which would allow me to travel between Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara?

    Thanks!
  • Hi,
Next time, please start a new thread with your question.

Only the full JR Pass covers all those cities quickly, but you would lose money on it because you don't travel enough.
You could look at the Kintetsu Rail Pass, but there is no bullet train with it and while cheap, it is much slower.

There is also the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, but it will take you way out of your way to get to your destinations.

Might be good if you visit the Hokuriku area.
