which railpass would be best

3/17 Kansai airport to Kyoto
3/20 Kyoto to Takayama
3/22 Takayama to Odawara
3/23 Odawara to Tokyo
3/27Tokyo to Narita Airport

Looks like 7 day since unless would make sense for time in Tokyo and transfer to airport?

  • Hi,
Unfortunately with your one way itinerary you don't make any JR pass pay off. You could save some money getting from KIX with a Haruka Icoca ticket.
You also might look at a Kintetsu Rail Pass. You can't take the bullet train and it takes a lot longer, but you can get as far as Nagoya, and it is quite cheap.
Otherwise, just get regular fare tickets.

For Hakone, you can save with a Hakone Free Pass.
The Loop Course is a common way to see all the sights and takes a full day.

In Tokyo, you can save with a 3 day subway pass
And to get to Narita, the cheapest way is the 1000 yen bus.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

    Best wishes.
  • Thanks but I am a little confused. I thought all my connections were covered by the JR Pass and the total cost would be more than the JR Pass: Kansai to Kyoto on JR Ltd Express Haruka; Kyoto to Takayama on Shinkansen Hikari and Ltd Express wide view HIDA; Takayama to Odawara on Lmt Express Wide View HIDA and Shinkansen Hikari; and Odawara to Tokyo on Shinkansen Kodama. Am I missing something?
  • All the routes would be covered, but the fares do not exceed the cost of the pass. To cover everything, you'd need a 14 day pass and you fall way short.
Even if you were to get a 7 day pass for Mar 20-26 it would not work.

Here is the breakdown from Hyperdia for the lowest speedy fare (adult, unreserved seat).
    1. Kyoto to Takayama: ¥ 9,180
    2. Takayama to Odawara: ¥ 11,980
    3. Odawara to Tokyo: ¥ 3,220

    TOTAL: ¥ 24,380
    7 day pass cost: ¥ 29,110

    Deficit: ¥ 4,730

Please don't forget that if you started using your pass on Mar 20, that counts as day 1 and your final day would be the end of Mar 26.
If you took one long day trip by bullet train though on Mar 24-26 to somewhere like Nikko, Kusatsu, Karuizawa etc you would at least break even and get some modest savings.
