Our 8 Days Trip in Japan

Hi, I will be arrive at Japan from March 29th 22.30pm, and thinking about rent a small flat to stay overnight, near our hotel in Shinjuku. What is the suggest transportation from Haneda to Shinjuku at 23.00pm?

We spent 3 days at Tokyo (March 30,31,1 April), and leave from shinjuku on April 2, (spare two days 2 and 3 April) to see mt Fuji (Gotemba n Kawaguchiko Lake), also want to see Karuizawa (ski resort), and stay at Kanazawa to see Shirakawago.
On 4 April we go to Osaka, stay for 3 night and leave on 7thApril from Kansai airport. (all our journey is from 29 March to 7April)

Is it possible, to go from shinjuku, and visit mt Fuji area, maybe stay at Karuizawa and then go and stay at Kanazawa to see Shirakawago ? and then leave to Osaka, Any suggest ? :) and what is the public transportation to take? We have 7day JR Pass.

Thank you.

  • Hi,
It's still possible to take the train to make it to Shinjuku if you board at 11 PM or so. You can see some options here:

However, if your plane lands at 11 PM, by the time you get your bags, go through Immigration & Customs, and finally are ready to leave the airport, it will be too late. In that case, you should consider either getting a hotel near the airport (there are some cheap ones like Toyoko Inn) or if there are 2-4 of you, to take a taxi (which is rather pricey - around ¥9000-10000).

Another option is a late night bus like
    http://hnd-bus.com/airport/nightmorningbus/
    https://www.limousinebus.co.jp/en/bus_services/haneda/shinjuku.html
but you may still have to use a taxi from someplace like Shibuya.

Your next problem is getting around Japan.
By my calculations, you are still slightly short of making the 7 day pass pay off. But just for the convenience it's still probably worth getting, and maybe you can take a day trip before going to Gotemba to break even.
To get around the Fuji area, you need to pay for a bus. Or consider getting a Fuji Hakone Pass.

You will also have to pay for the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago - and reservations are required. You can see Shirakawago in a few hours.

For Tokyo you might look at getting a 2-3 day subway pass.

Hopefully you will make some time to see Kyoto and Nara. They have some of Japan's very best sights.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box if on a JR Pass since you can't ride that train using the JR pass. You can take the Nozomi however on the japanican ticket.

  • First, it's better to start a new thread and not piggyback your question on someone else's.
Including Nikko, you would make a 7 day pass pay off with your plans, although as you said, it won't cover everything. You should use your pass for Mar 14-20.
For the Fuji 5 Lakes area, you can take a train from Shinjuku Stn in Tokyo up to Otsuki - after that you have to pay for the Fujikyu train the rest of the way (¥1140, 55 min). There are also various tourist discount tickets you can use. Have a look at the bottom of:
    https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6905.html

For going to Osaka, you need to catch a bullet train from either Tokyo Stn or Shinagawa Stn - use whichever is closer. Get off the bullet train at Shin-Osaka and take the train to Osaka Stn. The Osaka Hilton is very close to the station on the south side. You cannot take the Osaka Loop Line to Kyoto and Kobe - the Loop Line only loops Osaka.
Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

Instead, I suggest you take at least half a day and see Nara - it was also a former capital and has some of Japan's best sights. Missing the Todaiji Great Buddha would be a tragedy. Nara Park has a lot of other great places, such as Kasuga Shrine, Kofukuji Temple, the Isuien and Yoshikien Gardens, and feeding the many deer in the area.

For your return on Mar 20, it will take you about 3 hours to get from Shin-Osaka back to Tokyo, and then another hour or so on the Narita Express to get near the airport.
