I need help deciding how to be economical with train tickets for my wife and my visit to Japan. We can't afford the nationwide pass. Here's our itinerary:
7/10 - arrive at Narita Airport
7/10-7/13 - stay at airbnb in Tokyo; will tour city
7/13-7/16 - stay in Kobe; will tour city and visit Awaji, Himeji, Akashi
7/16-7/19 - stay in Kyto; will tour city and visit Arashiyama, Gion Matsuri
7/19-7/22 - stay in Takatsuki; will tour Osaka, Suita
7/22- return to Tokyo
7/23 - leave Narita Airport to America
Can anyone give me good advice about which passes work best for us?

There is no pass that can help you here. Your stay is over 7 days in the Kansai area, and you do not travel enough to justify a 14 day pass.
If you find the JR Pass too expensive for you, you could get a japanican ticket for Tokyo to Osaka, but you would need to cut your trip down to 7 days or less.

For going to Himeji, you could use a Kansai Area Pass.
