Transportation in Tokyo

If we buy a jr pass we can use it to/from the airport, right? Can we also use it for some of the local transportation within Tokyo? If not - what kind of pass would you recommend in order to take us to the top10 or more sights (we plan to stay in Tokyo 2-3 days)? .... or maybe it is not here I should put that question..

  • Hi,
You don't say which airport you are using. If Narita, you can use the JR Pass for the Narita Express train. If landing at Haneda, you can use the pass on the monorail and then the JR Yamanote Line.
You can go to a number of popular tourist areas on the JR Yamanote Line and JR Chuo Line in Tokyo, but perhaps not all the places you want to visit.
However, the JR Pass is made for long distance travel (especially by bullet train) and not simply travel within cities. Unless you do enough long distance travel, a JR Pass would be a terrible waste of money.

There is also a 48 and 72 hour Tokyo subway day pass that can save you some money.

You can find regular rail fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box if on a full JR Pass since you can't ride that train using the pass.
