7D Rail Pass or other combination - Tokyo, Kyoto...and other places

I'm wondering what is the best pass to purchase with the following itinerary:

day 1 (Sat) arrive Tokyo Narita
day 2 Tokyo
day 3 leave Tokyo go to Kyoto
day 4 Kyoto
day 5 Kyoto
Day 6 Kyoto
day 7 Hakone
Day 8 leave Hakone, to Tokyo and fly out of Narita

I was thinking of activating the pass on Day 3
Would the 7D pass also cover my train from Tokyo station to Narita?

Thanks !

  • Hello

The only pass that covers all these regions is the national JR Pass. If you purchase the 7 day rail pass then activate it on the third day for your journey to Kyoto, this will the cheapest option.

The JR Pass does cover the Narita Express, but you can purchase a one way when you arrive at Narita to cover your journey into Tokyo. You can find prices here: http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/nex/tickets.html. Or alternatively there is the limousine bus service that goes directly to your hotel, however it will depend on what time you land on whether you can use the bus. You can find more information on the limousine bus service here: https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/services/transfer-tokyo.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hey, if your getting the 7 day pass and your in Japan for 8 days, why not activate your pass on day 2 so it will run out on day 8 when your are leaving. Unless you have a free shuttle, either the first day or the last day. Otherwise Id activate my pass the 2nd day, and either pay out of pocket for the a bus (limo etc), or take one of the many trains. Hyperdia.com is a great resources for checking prices and times.
