3 week trip, 7 day JR

Hi guys!

So a group of 5 of us are planning on going to Japan during May and I would like some advise on how to minimize our costs traveling around. Our schedule will look like:

May17: Arrive Tokyo(NRT) 2:40 pm and go straight to Osaka
May18-21: We're staying at Osaka and just going to train around for the next 4 days. We're planning on visiting Kobe, Kyoto, and Nara.
May 22: Arrive in Hakone early morning and spending the night.
May 23: Heading out early morning towards Tokyo. And we're going to stay in Tokyo for 2 weeks before heading back to Canada.

We planned it so we are to purchase a 7 day JR Pass and we were thinking about just using Tokyo's Metro system when we're in Tokyo. But would it be better just to purchase the Regional pass Kansai instead of the 7 day JR pass? Is it cheaper use Tokyo's Metro system than the JR?

Also the location we are staying at requires us to get off at Skaisuji-Honmachi subway station, exit 15. Is that part of JR station? Assuming we get the regular JR pass, how long does it take to get to Osaka from Tokyo?

Thanks in advance for the help!

(P.S. Is there an app or something we can carry with us when we're travelling that will help us with the train system? That we can input an address and it'll tell us the best route to take?)

    Hello

As you are traveling to Osaka and Tokyo and back and around the Kansai region. The JR Pass will probably be the best option for you. There is a great website www.hyperdia.com where you can find all the fares for the journeys that you are planning to make. You can compare this to purchasing a JR Pass. Hyperdia.com also have app that you can download for train schedules, however you will need to connected to the internet to use this.

For travel within cities the best thing to use would be a pre-paid top up card. This can be used on the Tokyo Metro and on local transport within other major Japanese cities. You can find information on these cards here: https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/services/pasmocard.

    Best regards
