I will be landing in Kix on 12/19.
12/19-23 - Osaka area
12/23-27 - Kyoto area
12/27- 1/1 - Tokyo area
Is it worth it to buy the 14 day pass?
The only big trip from Osaka is to travel to Himeji on one of the days, the rest will be spent in local Osaka area.
We will stay put in Kyoto locally for the entire 4 days.
On 12/27, we will take Shinkansen Hikari from Kyoto to Shinjuku.
We will travel locally in Tokyo area until our departure on 1/1.
If I buy the 7 day pass, which day should I activiate it?

If the main journey you are making is from Kyoto to Tokyo one way, it wouldn't be economical to purchase the JR Pass.
For travel in the local area of Osaka and Kyoto, you can use a regional pass for the Kansai area. You can use this to travel to Himeji from Osaka and Osaka to Kyoto. You can also use this pass from Kansai Airport. The Kansai JR Pass is available for 1,2,3 or 4 days. You can find more information here: https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/pass-regional/kansai/jr-kansai-area-pass.
If you are only making a one way trip to Tokyo you can purchase a single ticket when you are in Japan. The cost of this around 13,710 yen. You can find the cost of journeys using this website, www.hyperdia.com.
Hope that helps.

Does the 7 day JR pass covers all the Kansei JR pass lines as well?
You'll find a detailed explanation of what the JR Pass covers here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html
