Rail pass for holiday season

Please advise which rail pass to purchase.

We are 2 people that will be travelling to:

Dec 23 - Tokyo
Dec 30 - Kyoto
Jan 5 - Koya San
Jan 6 - Osaka

We may do a day trip to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo, or see Nara on the way to / from Koya San.

- Which type of pass should we get?
- Is it necessary to reserve our seats as it is a busy travel time?
- Which is the best way to arrive to Koya San from Kyoto.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi Sara

The only pass that will cover all these places is the national JR Pass. This pass is available for 7, 14 or 21 days. As you are not traveling back to Tokyo it may be cheaper to purchase a one way ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto and regional passes for the Kansai region and travel to Koya-san. You can use this website, www.hyperdia.com, to work out the prices of the fares.

There is a Koyasan World Heritage Ticket that you can purchase from Namba in Osaka, to Koya san. This ticket works on the Nankai railway.

The New Year holidays are a busy time of year to travel so it maybe best to reserve seats in advance. You can only reserve seats in advance when you have exchanged your pass in Japan, you can do this at a ticket office.

    Hope that helps.
