Is the jr pass worth it?

after a week of skiing in niseko area, we are heading back to tokyo then nagano for a week total. so trains would include- sapporo to new chitose, NRT to tokyo, in and around tokyo for a few days, Tokyo to nagano, nagano to tokyo, and tokyo to HND. Is it worth buying a pass? If so which pass is the right one for me?

    Hi Shelby

For your trip it maybe best to use the JR East Pass, this pass is valid for 5 days within a 14 day period. This would cover your travel from Narita to Tokyo, Tokyo to Nagano and back to Tokyo. This would be cheaper that getting a JR Pass. You can find more information on the pass here: https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/pass-regional/east/jr-east-pass

The JR Pass isn't very useful for travel around Tokyo as you can only really use it on the JR Yamanote line and the Tokyo Monorail. The Pasmo card is best for travelling around Tokyo, this is a pre-paid top up card that you can use on local transports within Tokyo.

You would need to purchase a one way from Niseko to New Chitose, this will cost around 2630 yen.

    Hope that helps.

    Best regards
