Hi , thanks for operating such a great forum.Looking for advice as to the best pass for our small group.
We are two adults (over 65) , and our granddaughter who will be 13 .Travelling late September early October.
We arrive in Osaka late 29th September and plan to have two nights there near to main railway station, and do all train bookings while there.
Then;
1st Oct. Osaka to Kurume (to visit friends )
3rd October Kurome to Kyoto
7th October Kyoto to Tokyo (either Shinagawa , or Kisarazu)
11th October Tokyo to Narita airport
My thought was a 7 day JR pass activated for first trip on 1st October. then for the 4 days in Tokyo just get day passes.
Is there a better plan? , or an train alternative pass?

I think you have a good plan, using a 7 day pass for Oct 1-7.
For Tokyo, there are good 48 & 72 hour subway passes to save money.

You'll have a chance to see two of the best sights in Kyushu, or all of Japan, really - the Naritasan Jibo Kannon in Kurume, and 20 minutes from Fukuoka City's Hakata Stn down the Sasaguri Line is the Nanzoin Temple, which is simply mind blowing yet nearly unknown even to experienced travelers. And if that isn't enough, in Fukuoka City there is also Japan's biggest wooden carved Great Buddha, at the Tochoji Temple, right next to the Gion subway station.

You'd also give yourself a better experience by adding a half day trip to Nara from Kyoto. The Todaiji Temple is one of Japan's finest, and your granddaughter would likely love feeding the many deer in Nara Park.
For a cheap way to Narita, you can use the 1000 yen bus.

You can find regular rail fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box if on a full JR Pass since you can't ride that train using the pass.
