  • To add on since I am staying near the Shin-Osaka station, the bullet train accessibility is quite convenient.

    Hi,
Just to give an observation, you should be bundling as much long distance travel as possible in order to maximize the savings you get with your JR Pass. So for example on Nov 19-20 you can see Tokyo, and on Nov 21-22 use can go to Hakone and activate the pass as your wrote on the 21st. For Tokyo if you will go across the city, look into getting a 2 day subway pass to save some money.

For Hakone, you cannot use the JR Pass to go all the way there. But you can take the bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara, and then use a Hakone Free Pass to save you some money to see Hakone.

The Loop course serves most people pretty well.

For Hiroshima/Miyajima, try to get an early morning start. Aside from the Itsukushima Shrine with the giant "floating" torii, the Daishoin Temple is also a must-see place -- and free!

For Nov 23-24, it's up to you, but Kyoto really needs more than a day. You could spend 1½ days there and ½ a day in Nara - most of the best is in Nara Park. The Todaiji Temple is a must see place, but also feeding the deer, seeing the Kofukuji Temple and Kasuga Shrine, plus if you like, the Isuien & Yoshikien Gardens there are lovely. They are all pretty close together in the park.

In Kyoto, the 2 Honganji Temples near Kyoto Stn. have some of the biggest wooden buildings in the world, and they open around dawn, plus the Fushimi Inari shrine is open 24/7 so if you have the energy, it's easy to fit them all in.

For Himeji Castle, don't miss the beauitiful Kokoen Garden next to it.

    Good luck.
  • Hi Aikshye,

Your itinerary looks good, and you definitely save some money using a JR Pass to cover the longer trips.

I agree with Tenjin that if you switch the days in Tokyo with the days in Hakone it would be better, since you could then use your pass to cover travel part of the way there, to Odawara.

However, you are certainly packing a lot of places into your trip! You mentioned that you are travelling with elderly relatives, so it might be worth considering if they will be able to keep up with such a busy schedule.

    Sincerely,
    Japan Experience
