Dear all,
My wife & I had planned a 14D Japan free & easy honeymoon and would like to seek your advice on how to maximize the JR pass (which type) and local travel pass. Suggestion on how to fine tune are greatly appreciated

Our plan are as below:

Day 1 (Night) : Arrive at Kansai International Airport
Scheduled Arrival :2120hrs
(understand if we use JR pass, we need to activate. What time does the counter close in Kansai)

Travel to Kyoto by Limousine Bus (with lugguage)

Day 2 (Dawn) : Arrive at Kyoto & check in hotel immediately

Day 3 - Kyoto > Nara (JR pass?)
Day 3 - Nara > Kyoto (JR pass?)

Day 4 - Kyoto > Kanazawa
(With luggage & check in hotel)
Plan to go Omicho Market (can use JR pass?)

Day 5 - Kanazawa > Shirakawago
Plan to go by bus (Nohi Bus)

Day 6 - no use of JR

Day 7 - Takayama > Nagoya > Hakone (Tokyo)

Day 8 - Hakone Yumoto (Fuji pass)

Day 9 - Hakone > Tokyo > Asakusa (JR pass?)

day 10 - Tokyov(can jr pass be used on local network)

day 11 - Tokyo > Kyoto~

day 12 - Kyoto > Osaka

day 13 - visit old osaka

day 14 - Kansai Airport

from above, should I get 7 day pass or 14 day pass.
Any suggestion to make the visit more interesting (eg any local tourist pass)

Your advice is greatly appreciated

  • The JR office hours are listed at:
    http://www.japanrailpass.net/en/exchange.html
    KIX office closes at 11PM.
If you activate it at KIX, why would you then take a bus to Kyoto? If you get lucky you might catch the last Haruka train to Kyoto, taking about 76 minutes and leaving about 10:15PM. Otherwise there are a couple of other later trains you can take with a transfer. See Hyperdia for train schedules and info:

I can't see how a 7 day pass works for you, and you almost make a 14 day pass pay off. I suggest you add a bit more to make up the difference. For example, since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. On Day 13 go to see Himeji, which has Japan's finest castle. The Kokoen Garden next door and Mt Shosha are also worthwhile. Then at least you'd break even.
For getting around Kanazawa, there is a loop bus (can't use the Pass) or rental bicycles to get around.
For Tokyo, you can use the Pass for the JR Yamanote Line, which goes to many of the best tourist sights.
Since it's your honeymoon, why not spend some nights at love hotels? They are all over the country, but mostly big cities. You can see some good and cheaper ones here:

Once you go in, you can't go out til you pay and leave, so bring some food and champagne with you for the night.
