3 weeks in japan - travel advice JR Pass?

Hi All,

Planning my first trip to Japan in Oct and need some advice of the most efficient/economical form of transport to get around for the 3 weeks. Should l invest in a 21 day JR pass or given we are spending some time in Tokyo to start go for the 14 day?

Here is a breakdown of our itinerary:

6 nights Tokyo with potential day trips to Nikki and Kamakura
5 nights in Osaka with potential day trips
3 nights in Hiroshima with day trip to Miyajima
4 nights in Kyoto with day trips to Nara etc
2 nights in Takayama
Back to Tokyo to fly out

Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers
Renee

  • Hello Renee!

I think you could rearrange your itinerary so that you're based out of Tokyo for no more than 14-days. This is with the 14-day pass in mind, but it's entirely up to you. Playing your cards right, your total spending on transportation should be less than the cost of the 21-day pass (even factoring your days in Tokyo and your day-trips to Nikko and Kamakura).

If you're willing to take some criticism on your itinerary, here's my two cents. There are better places to be other than 5 nights of Osaka and 3 nights of Hiroshima, so make sure that those 'potential' day trips stop being potential. Better yet, look up some other places of interest to overnight. My suggestion would be one of the many onsen towns.
