Fukuoka (Hakata) --> Kyoto --> Tokyo using JR National Pass possible?

Hello,

We will be flying in to Fukuoka to visit a friend. Then would like to go to Kyoto and then to Tokyo.

Rail pass is cheaper then separate tickets to each city combined. Is it possible to navigate from Fukuoka to Kyoto and then to Tokyo using the JR National Rail Pass? How long will the trip take from Fukuoka to Kyoto? Is there a shinkashen?

Thank you :)

It's certainly possible to take the bullet train the whole way, and the JR Pass might save you some - but it depends on your time frame and plans.
You should not skip seeing Fukuoka either - it has some very nice places, although few know about them. The Nanzoin Temple is one of Japan's best, yet totally unknown to even the well traveled and tourist guidebook "experts".

Best time from Hakata to Kyoto is 192 minutes, with one transfer at Shin-Kobe. That is not taking the Nozomi or Mizuho train, which you can't use with the JR Pass.
But compared to the unreserved adult regular tickets from Hakata to Kyoto and Kyoto to Tokyo, the 7 day pass still comes out slightly higher than the cost of regular tickets.
Unreserved adult seat Hakata to Kyoto - ¥15,120
Unreserved adult seat Kyoto to Tokyo - ¥13,080
    Total: ¥28200
    7 Day Rail Pass: ¥29,110
    Money lost using pass: ¥910

So you'd almost break even. If you did a small side trip like visiting Himeji, or using the Narita Express just once, or a day trip to Nikko, etc, then you would come out ahead.
