  • Hi,
You don't ever "need" a pass - but you would save money with one. If you went to Nikko, then to Kansai with your side trip to Hakone, and down to Hiroshima/Miyajima plus back to Osaka within 7 days, you would get some good savings on a 7 day pass. However, you may need to rearrange your plans to go down to Hiroshima before your Kyoto stay - the plan only works if you complete all long distance travel within 7 consecutive days.

For Hakone, you can use a Hakone Free Pass to see the area.

The Loop Course is a common way to see all the sights and takes a full day.

You could also use the JR Pass on the Loop Bus in Hiroshima and the JR ferry to Miyajima. Aside from the Itsukushima Shrine with the giant "floating" torii, the Daishoin Temple is also a must-see place. There are several other pagodas and temples, and climbing Mt. Misen offers a fantastic view over the island and whole area.
