Would 14 days JR pass will be worth it?

Question 1: 16 days itinerary in Japan
Will 14 days JR would be wroth it to use from Day 1 to Day 14 itinerary?

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo vai NRT airport
Day 2: Tokyo to Osaka via Bullet Train
Day 3: Osaka to Kii-Tanabe to trek Kumano
Day 4: Kumano
Day 5: Kuamno
Day 6: Kumano to Osaka (train from Kii-Katsuura to Osaka)
Day 7: Osaka
Day 8: Osaka
Day 9: Osaka to Nara, then Nara to Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto
Day 11: Kyoto
Day 12: Kyoto
Day 13: Kyoto to Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo
Day 15: Tokyo
Day 16: Tokyo to NRT airport, Fly home

Question 2: A friend of mine is joining the trip from Day 7 to Day 16 from Osaka airport. Would 7 days JR pass will be worth it for this itinerary? If it is worth it, when should the pass be activated

Day 7: Kansai airpot to Osaka
Day 8: Osaka
Day 9: Osaka to Nara, then Nara to Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto
Day 11: Kyoto
Day 12: Kyoto
Day 13: Kyoto to Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo
Day 15: Tokyo
Day 16: Tokyo to NRT airport, Fly home

    Q1 - No, unfortunately you don't travel enough to make a 14 day pass pay off.
    Q2 - No, one way trips like this don't pay off without some extensive side or day trips.

  • Thank you for the reply. Just curious, how much money would we save buying normal ticket over 14 days pass with the 16 days trip itinerary? Also where would be buy the normal ticket? Can we buy those in advanced and reserve the seating, etc? Thanks!

    If you want to compute the fares, you can easily plug in the routes and add them up on a site like
    www.hyperdia.com
    Note that you must add the total fare, not just the base fare. You can deselect reserved seating and use unreserved seating for a more realistic figure (unless you are going during a peak period, like the end/start of the year, when it makes sense to reserve the seats).
    You can buy the tickets from any JR station.
