14 DAYS IN JAPAN - 7 DAYS PASS

Good day

We are going to Japan (us two and our 14 years old son) in August, landing at Narita on August 10 at 1.30pm and leaving from Narita on August 24, so 14 nights in Japan.
We are thinking of the following itinerary so it would suit buying 7-days JR passes :

10/8 head straight to Kyoto
11/8 Kyoto
12/8 Kyoto
13/8 Kyoto
14/8 Kyoto – during our stay there we would like to make sidetrips to Nara and Himeji, and maybe Osaka
15/8 Hiroshima
16/8 Hiroshima
17/8 go to Hakone : is that doable from Hiroshima?
18/8 Hakone
19/8 Tokyo
20/8 Tokyo
21/8 Tokyo
22/8 Tokyo
23/8 Tokyo

Would that be possible with a 7-days JR pass?
Also, while in Tokyo, what would be possible sidetrips (we were thinking about Izu) ?
And are we missing something good / obvious?
Or would it be better to do it the other way round, like stay in Tokyo at the start of our trip, then go to Hakone and then to Kyoto / Hiroshima?

Many thanks for your time, it will be the first time in Japan for us!

    Hi,
Well, first the order is entirely up to you - although really to take a long airplane ride and then rush to Kyoto can be pretty hard on you. You might want to say in Tokyo first and give yourself a light first day to get used to the time difference and rest up.

More importantly though, if you were to use a 7 day rail pass from Aug 10th, your last day of the pass would be Aug 16, but you have yourself in Hiroshima an extra day.
You can go to Hakone from Hiroshima, although it's 4 hours on the trains to get to Mishima Stn, and then a bit more to reach Hakone. You will likely be short of time. It would be better to do it as a day trip from Tokyo - go to Odawara Stn, then get a Hakone Free Pass, and then see the area - it will take a full day.

If you want to see Izu, look at getting a Tokyo Wide Pass - it's good for 3 days, but even just once to Izu makes it pay off.

Other places you might want to see are Nikko, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, the Hitachi Seaside Park, Kamakura and so on.
Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.
For Hiroshima, you can see both the city and Miyajima in a day with an early morning start.
