Please give your full itinerary. How many days? Are you going back to Tokyo?
  • thanks, I will arrive late night in Haneda (22 June), and stay in yokohama area for 2 nights, 24 June to Mt Fuji, and stay at (?), 25 June to takayama/shirakawago (stay in takayama/toyama?), 26 June to Kyoto, 28 June to Osaka and leave Japan. So i arrive in Tokyo and leaving from Osaka, not going back to Tokyo.
  • Hi Tenjin, if i want to add alpine route and hiroshima would it be possible? thanks again
  • Hi,
A 7 day pass would not pay off for your plans. It would if you also went to Hiroshima and back, but your plans are already full for 6 days - unless you're willing to lengthen your trip, when are you supposed to go to all these places?
  • Hi Tenjin, I will arrive late night in Haneda (22 June), and stay in yokohama area for 2 nights, 24 June to Mt Fuji, and stay at (?), 25 June to takayama/shirakawago (stay in takayama/toyama?), 26 June to Kyoto, 28 June to Osaka and leave Japan. i still have 2 days in osaka before leaving Japan on 30 June
  • Hi,
Well, if you used a 7 day pass for June 24-30, went to Hiroshima/Miyajima as a day trip with an early morning start, and saw Hakone as a day trip on the way to Kansai, you could make a 7 day pass pay off. Realistically I don't see how you can fit in the Tateyama Alpine Route.
To see Hakone, you can get a Hakone Free Pass.
If you're going to see Shirakawago, staying there overnight is a real treat.

Be aware though that there is no train to Shirakawago - you must pay for the bus.

  • Hi! I am planning to go on a Japan trip in december 2017. My flight will reach tokyo on 19 Dec morning. My return flight will be on 27 Dec from Nagoya. I hope to cover the alpine route or any other parts of Japan where I have a higher chance to experience snowfall. Are there any suggestions on the itinerary? Thank you.
  • Hi,
First, it's better to start a new thread and not piggyback your question on someone else's.
A JR Pass would not pay off for you. But some regional passes might help.
    You might consider:

There are several good places you can see snow - especially in Nagano and Niigata.
Yuzawa might be one of the easiest to reach with just the Tokyo Wide Pass.

  • HELLO HI, I am reposting this here because my Original Post has been piggybacked by an irrelvant post - so here it is again.

WE NEED HELP on knowing which JR Pass to buy.

Hello hi, my first time here and also first time wondering how to buy the JR Pass...this is our planned programme

Day 1 - Landing in Osaka at Night 9.35pm Kansai - staying near Sumiyoshi-ku > How do we go there?

Day 2 - Osaka - Osaka Castle day time & Shinsaibashi dinner meetup with old friend

Day 3 - Osaka - Universal Studios Japan

Day 4 - Go to Kyoto morning (by Shinkansen - what time and which station > Shin Osaka Station?)

Day 5 - Kyoto - dinner with Japanese friend

Day 6 - Go to Tokyo morning - will there be Shinkansen on a Sunday and what time is Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo - I cannot understand the timetable that I downloaded in pdf from JR Central website - will stay in Shinjuku.

Day 7 - Tokyo - go to Studio Ghibli > Can use JR Pass? We have SUICA cards

Day 8 - Go back to Osaka from Tokyo - what time is Shinkansen from Tokyo we must go if we want to visit Himeiji Castle on this day from Osaka

Day 9 - Osaka to Hiroshima / Miyajima Shrine

Day 10 - Osaka to Kansai - have to be at the airport at 8.30am. Plane leave at 10.30am.

So which JR Pass should we buy - 7 Day JR Pass or 14 Day JR Pass? Should we think of the Kansai Wide Pass as well??

Hope to see good answer soon. Thank you so much!
  • So sorry for the "intrusion "! I didn't mean to piggyback on someone's post. It's just that I am posting it for the first time and didn't know that I should start a new thread. Many apologies!
  • Can you please advice an itinerary from Narita airport to Tokyo, Hakodate, and Sapporo around 13 January? Returning around the 23rd.
  • Again, please, if you have a new question, start a new thread.

As to what to see, that is entirely up to your interests. There are many good places to see - hot spring resorts, castles, temples, and so on. But January is the dead of winter and there will be snow and cold. If you like skiing, there should be no shortage of that either.

There are 2 rail passes that might save you some money. One is the 7 day JR Pass, and there is also the JR East South Hokkaido Pass. The full JR Pass covers 7 consecutive days, and the South Hokkaido Pass covers 6 travel days (your choice) within 14 days.

You might look at the map of the Tohoku region at

and see what appeals to you.
In Hokkaido, Hakodate, Sapporo, and Otaru are 3 popular areas within the area.
