JR Rail Pass

My wife and I are planning a 13 night trip to Japan in October. We will arrive at Narita Airport in Tokyo, then proceed to the Shingawa Station. Our first 10 nights will be in Tokyo. We would like to take one trips using the rail pass. When we leave Tokyo, we will proceed to Osaka for 3 nights. Is the pass good for the lines in Osaka? Is the 14 day pass recommended.?

  • Hi,
A 14 day pass would not pay off for only going down to the Kansai area (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara) and returning. If you take an additional day trip from Kansai to Hiroshima/Miyajima, then you would at least break even. Or take several day trips from Tokyo to make up the difference.

You can easily take the bullet train to Osaka, and even use it on the Osaka Loop Line to get around somewhat. But it's unclear why you'd go there, since it's more or less a clone of Tokyo. The real jewels of the country are in Kyoto and Nara.
  • Will the pass allow me to go to Kyoto and Nara from Osaka? Also are there one day trips that you would recommend from both Tokyo and Osaka?
  • Easily.
There are many good places from Tokyo, in fact a 7 day pass plus a Tokyo Wide Pass

comes up cheaper than the 14 day pass. You could go to Nikko, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, Izu, Kawagoe, Takao, Okutama, Kamakura, Yokohama, the Hitachi Seaside Park, Nokogiriyama, and partway on the pass to Hakone or the Fuji 5 Lakes area. If you have the full JR Pass, then you could even go up to Sendai which is 90 minutes away.

In the Kansai area, there is Himeji, Koyasan, Miyama, Amanohashidate, Hikone, Iga-Ueno, Kinosaki hot springs, Okayama, Kurashiki, and many more.
