I will be traveling with my family of five during Obon. We fly in to Tokyo on Thursday, August 6. We plan to activate our JR pass on Monday, August 10 for day trips and then leave to Kyoto on Wednesday, August 12. While there we will also be traveling to Osaka and Hiroshima. Will we have trouble getting seats? Any recommendations to avoid seating issues? What about luggage? Will bringing our luggage be an issue? Thanks!

Obon season is quite a busy period in Japan. If you travel first class you are more likely to get seats. We would also recommend you travel as light as possible, as there is not a lot of space to place your luggage on the trains.
