Is my 14 day itinerary okay?

Planning on getting a 14-day JR Pass, but wanted to make sure it is worthwhile. Have checked Hyperdia and think that I am okay, but asking the experts. Here is my itinerary:
Arrive Mar 28, 3 days Tokyo, maybe day trip to Nikko?
Day 4 Shizuoka
Day 5 Takayama
Day 6 Kanazawa
Day 7-11 Kyoto, (staying near Lake Biwa) day trip to Nara
Day 12-13 Hiroshima, stop at Himeji
Day 14 Fly home from Hiroshima
Is it easy to use the JR Pass in Tokyo and Kyoto?

  • Hi,
With the trip to Nikko included, with most of the way by bullet train, you would make a 14 day pass pay off.
After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can also zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.
You can use the JR Pass in Tokyo for the Yamanote Line for example, but fares are cheap and you won't get much value from it.

In Kyoto you can use the pass to go to Arashiyama as well as down the Nara Line to the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Nara, naturally, but very little else. You will need some local transport around Kyoto - there is a 500 yen bus day pass. The subway goes to a few places but actually is not that helpful - as well as being one of the more expensive.
