8 days in Kansai Region

Hi, We're a family of 3 travelling to Kansai via KIX. Osaka will be our base accommodation for 8 days (Dec 25 to Jan 2) and will have daytime trips to Kobe, Nara and Kyoto plus 1 day in Tokyo (Tokyo Bigsight) on Dec 30.

We are looking at getting the 7-day passes. Would this be enough for our itinerary?

Thank you.

  • Hello

Yes the 7 day JR Pass is the best for your itinerary as you are crossing a few regions, so this is the only pass that would do that. If you need any further assistance please let us know.

  • Thank you! Will get 7-day passes then. Cheers!
  • WE ARE GOING to osaka this feb 11-18 and we are planning to visit koto-himeji-kanazawa and biwako valley, what is the cheapest ride? should we get a JR Pass? what type?
  • Hi Kathy

For these areas you can use the JR Kansai Wide Area Pass. This will cover Kyoto, Himeji and Biwako Valley. For travel to Kanazawa you would need to purchase a return as this is not covered by the regional passes.

You can use this website, hyperdia.com, to find the fares for each journey and compare with the price of the national JR Pass or regional JR Kansai Wide Pass.

    - In search conditions, write the departure and arrival locations
    - The search will provide you the fare for this travel
    - Do the same for all your trips by train
    - Just compare with the price of a JR Pass 7, 14 or 21 days
    (Check the price here: http://www.japan-rail-pass.com/)

You want to be sure, you can access to this train with a JR Pass:
    - In “search details”, unclick “Nozomi, Mizuho, Hayabusa (shinkansen)” and “private railway”
    - The search result will show you all the trains you can access with a Japan Rail Pass

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi MLEONG5

Looking at your itinerary. It would be best for you to get a 7 day JR Pass and activate it when you traveling to Himeji on day 2. This would be the cheapest way of traveling.

The 7 day JR Pass would then cover all your longer journeys to Takayama and Tokyo. The JR Pass isn't very useful once in Tokyo, you would be better off to get a Pasmo card. This is a pre-paid top up card, you can also use this for local transport in other large cities such as Osaka and Kyoto.

You will need to pay for the bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go as this is not covered by the JR Pass. The cost for this is about 2,470 on way.

    Hope that helps

  • Hi Japan Experience,

    Thanks for useful feedback.

    Additional questions would be:

    1. Travelling from Kyoto to Tokyo, does JR 7-days pass cover the route using the Japan JR northland new route and how is the journey like? How to travel from which station to get down to another and so on?

    2. Where do I to buy Pasmo card, is it at the Osaka Kansai International airport?

    3. Is it useful by getting the “5-days Metro Pass” for multiple usage in Tokyo, if yes, where can I get it?

    Many thanks
