Should we buy a JR National Rail Pass?

Hello,

We are travelling (2 adults and an infant) to Japan, arriving in Osaka on 22nd April 2016.
Itinerary
Day 1 Osaka Kansai airport to Kyoto
Day 2 Kyoto
Day 3 Day trip to Nara (Kyoto-Nara-Kyoto)
Day 4 Kyoto
Day 5 Kyoto- Osaka Kansai airport. Hirosaki (by airplane)-Aomori airport to Hirosaki
Day 6 Hirosaki- Tokyo
Day 7 Tokyo
Day 8 Tokyo-Nikko-Tokyo
Day 9 Tokyo- Hakone- Fuji Shibazakura Festival- Tokyo
Day 10 Tokyo to Narita airport

Please advise if it will it be more economical to buy per trip tickets or JR pass for our trip?

Any comments are welcome too.

Thank you

  • Hi,
A 7 Day JR Pass would definitely pay off for your trip, used between Days 4-10. For Day 5 you can use it for the Haruka train to KIX, and on Day 10 use it for the Narita Express to Narita Airport. If you want to squeeze a little more savings out of it, you could use it to go to Nara on Day 4 instead of Day 3.

After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg, and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.

For the shibazakura, there are special tours you can take, or special buses from Lake Kawaguchi. There is some useful info for you on:
