I am getting a JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass for my holiday in Kyushu. In my itinerary, I will be going to Yufuin from Hakata by Ltd Exp Yufuin No Mori. Just wonder my pass is cover on this train?

  • Hi,
Well first, you don't specify exactly where you are starting from or wanting to end up. The JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass only covers the bullet train to Hakata.

If you are considering travel in northern Kyushu, you should be looking at the JR Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu Pass.

If you are starting in Kyushu, then why look at the JR West passes at all? The Kyushu Rail Pass would be the one you want to look at.

Of course, you may not be giving your full itinerary or time frame, so it may or may not be economical for you.
Yufuin is a tranquil place for hot springs, but Hakata has some good sights to see and worth some attention as well.

  • Hi Tenjin,
Thank you for your reply, and sorry that I didn't share my itinerary clearly. I will have around 6-7 days trip in kitakyushu when I touch down in Kansai Airport.

Planned to visit some places such as Mojiko, Karawachi Westeria garden, Kokura, Yufuin, Hakata. On the 7th day in my kitakyushu itinerary, I will go to Kobe from Hakata. Stay a night in Kobe for the night scene and then back to Osaka on the next day. Follow by 3 days city tour in Osaka. So I plan to get the 7 days Sanyo Sanin Area Pass to cover my trip on the first 7 days from Osaka --> Hakata --> Kobe.

I have checked the rail routes & timetable from Hyperdia and found I will have a chance riding on the Limited Express Yufuin No Mori car on the day trip to Yufuin, and I wonder is my pass cover on this route?
  • As it shows in the coverage map in the link I gave above, on the Sanyo Sanin Area Pass you can only take the bullet train to Hakata. If you want to travel in northern Kyushu, as already mentioned, you would be better off with the Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu Pass. In fact, you'd get good savings with it. On the official page,

the Yufuin no Mori is not listed as one of the few that you can't take with the pass.
You could take the train from Hakata Stn all the way, or you could take the bullet train to Kumamoto and catch the Yufuin no Mori there.
As far as the Kawachi Fujien goes, you'd need to get tickets ahead of time for it at a Family Mart convenience store. You choose the date and time, and the pay an extra charge when you arrive (the peak bloom time being the most expensive). I was able to get on a free shuttle bus for the garden from Yahata Stn but there are a lot of people lining up for it.
You can search this old discussion board with lots more on that.

    Good luck.
  • Hi Tenjin,
Thank you for your reply and it was the informative one! I will consider to get the Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu Pass for more route coverage.
I have bought the Kawachi Fujien ticket via Japanican website, now I hope I manage to pop in to the free bus and get to the garden on time.
