JR rail pass for month in Japan?

Hi a relative and I are spending a month in Japan next spring. We are staying around 3 areas mostly. 2 weeks in Tokyo, 4 nights in Kawaramachi and 2 weeks in Kyoto. We will be arriving at Narita airport and flying out of Narita Airport. Is a JR pass worthwhile (either 7 day or 14 day)? Thank you.

  • Hi,
For what you write, neither the 7-day nor 14-day pass would pay off. Kawaramachi is downtown Kyoto, by the way. So if you go from Tokyo to Kansai for just over 2½ weeks, the 21-day pass is the only one that could possibly work for you, and you'd need to significantly add more travel to your plans to make it worthwhile. If you're unwilling to do this, then just get regular fare tickets.

But if you are, there are tons of great sights you can see, and you have the time to do so. About 3-4 days in Tokyo are quite enough unless you have a long list of places you really want to see. There are many great day trips you can take, such as Nikko, Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes area, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, Izu, Kamamura/Enoshima, Sendai, Kawagoe, Takao, Okutama, Yokohama, the Ushiku Great Buddha, Nokogiriyama, Minakami, Showa Kinen Park, and more.

There are some good trips from Kyoto also - Himeji, Hikone, Nara, Hiroshima & Miyajima, Takamatsu, Miyama, Amanohashidate, and many more. Going from Tokyo through Kanazawa to Kyoto offers more chances to see some beautiful places.

You can check on train info on Hyperdia - you can see regular fares, routes, and schedules.

Under "More Options", if using the full JR pass be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.
