So I'm going to Japan in August and would like to buy the 7 day JR pass sooner rather than later, but I'm not sure if my itinerary justifies spending money on it. Can someone please clarify?
I arrive in Tokyo on the 4th Aug and fly out from Tokyo on the 14th Aug, so I am there for 10 days. I wouldn't activate the pass until the 8th Aug to ensure I can get back to Tokyo.
I plan on also going to Kyoto and Hiroshima for a few days. So my question is, are there suitable trains covering these routes? and is it worth my while purchasing a pass?

I will be getting a national pass. Would the national pass be best or would any of the regional passes be suitable for my travels?
I strongly recommend you take at least half a day and see Nara in addition to Kyoto. After a day of sightseeing in Kyoto, you can also go to Osaka for the evening - Dotonbori, the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg at night are terrific.
The pass can also be used in Hiroshima for the Loop Bus, as well as the ferry to Miyajima, which is very worthwhile seeing.
For Tokyo, within the city, there is a 2-3 day subway pass which is good.

If you want to see some places around Tokyo, look into getting a Tokyo Wide Pass.

If you want to see the Mt Fuji area, there are regional passes for there as well.

And if landing at Narita, look into the 1000 yen bus or Keisei+Metro Package.
