Places to visit with JRP from Tokyo

Hello all!

This is my second trip to Japan and I'm planning to get a japan rail pass, was wondering which prefectures are next places for a day visit.

Previously I've been to osaka, kyoto ,yokohama ,sendai ,morioka ,nara ,kanazawa. It was always taking the train at early hours and taking the last train back to Tokyo. Quite tiring but still fun!

Looking for more places to go.. but having to take the train from Tokyo.

May I also ask, what is the settings to input at hyperdia to see which trains are available only for japan rail pass?

Thank you very much!

    Hi,
If you only want day trips from Tokyo, I suggest you look at the Tokyo Wide Pass. It's ¥10,000 for 3 days and works out to be a lot cheaper for you.

Naturally the distance allowed is not as far as with the full JR Pass, but to be honest, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara are really too far to be a day trip, and you have barely scratched the surface if you only spent one day in Kyoto - you could spend weeks there and not see it all.

In the Tokyo area there are many good places that you apparently have not been to yet, including Kamakura/Enoshima, Nikko, Karuizawa, Takaosan, Izu, the Boso Peninsula, and Kusatsu. Plus there is Hakone as well as the Fuji 5 Lakes area, although a different pass would be needed to see that area.

You are hardly limited to only the trains, though. Hokkaido and Okinawa as well as many other places are within a few hours' flight, and on a low cost carrier like Jet Star, Vanilla Air or Peach, you can get there for peanuts.

    Hi Tenjin,

Thank you for the fast response!
The thing is our accommodation is set in Tokyo, thus we don't mind the long train rides to reach the places.

Would the Tokyo Wide pass allow me to reach Mt. Fuji? Was planning to visit Gotemba.. and fuji Q.

I'm quite new to this pass.. and never really check on the rest except JR pass which I'm familiar with previously.

The thing is.. we are afraid of getting flight delays which will mess up our itinerary, if not i'd have flown to Hokkaido! But accommodation is not really cheap there compared to our Tokyo's accommodation.

Ahh, Now I'm tempted to fly to Sapporo. It is very accessible by trains?

Also, are there any trains to Hiroshima from Tokyo?

    Thank you!

    Hi,
As shown on the Tokyo Wide Pass link I gave, in the map it does cover the JR trains and Fujikyu trains. You can see the detailed map on
    http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6905.html
There is no train to Fuji - it's a steep mountain, with only bus access to the 5th station. There is nothing really to see there at all - no view of Fuji since you're on it.
Gotemba is on the other side of Fuji from Fuji Q Highland and Lake Kawaguchi. The Odakyu pass can give you bus access if you wish, otherwise from Tokyo you can take a JR train to Odawara and then pay or use the Odakyu Pass to go to Gotemba, Hakone, etc.
You can fly to Sapporo in less than 2 hours. A train would take 8 hours and kill the whole day. Flight delays are rarely a problem in Japan.
Of course there are trains from Hiroshima to Tokyo. One way on the Pass would take at least 4¾ hours - not really feasible for a day trip.

You can take a bullet train from Shin-Kobe to Kyoto. But on the Pass you can't ride the Nozomi, and there are not a lot of other bullet trains. Still, it is possible and Hyperdia can show you the schedule. Otherwise, you'll need to transfer along the way.

for the limited express trains, hokuto/ super kamui in sapporo, I'm also covered under the JR pass? Is it possible to get a seat reservation at the jr pass ticket office for the limited express trains too?

    Hi Souled,

Yes, the Limited Express Hokuto and Super Kamui are covered by the JR Pass. All seats on the Super Samui are non-reserved, but you can make seat reservations for the Hokuto at JR ticket offices.
