JAPAN TO COREA

Is it possible to be based in Tokyo and taking day trips to other cities such Hiroshima?
What is the best way to travel from Japan to Korea ? Is it ok by ferry ?

  • Trying to take a day trip to Hiroshima from Tokyo is very ill-advised. Using a rail pass you'd get your money's worth, but one way is about 5 hours, leaving very little time to see the city.

There are many closer good day trips from Tokyo, including Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes, Izu, Kusatsu, and Karuizawa.

You can take a ferry from Shimonoseki or Fukuoka for example, but it takes all night. A faster choice is the Beetle hydrofoil from Fukuoka. These days though you can get a very cheap airline ticket on airlines like Air Busan that are so much faster.
  • It's possible to be based in Tokyo and make day trips to other cities, but Hiroshima is not one of those cities. Did you know that Hiroshima is almost 900 km from Tokyo?

The best way to get to Korea is by air, hands-down. Ferry is OK.
  • Tenjin is right that closer day trips from Tokyo are a better idea. Nikko is wonderful, and Fuji Five Lakes has a lot to offer.

The JR Beetle is indeed a good option if you are interested in travelling by ferry between Japan and South Korea: http://www.jrbeetle.co.jp/internet/english/index.html

Or you could look into flying. Air Busan can be very affordable, especially if you can be flexible with dates or times:
