My brother and I are traveling to Japan for 8 days in October. We are flying directly to Osaka from Narita on 10/1. We'll travel to Kyoto on 10/3. We are staying one night in Hakone 10/5. We'll go from Hakone to Tokyo on 10/6 and we leave from Tokyo Narita on 10/9.
1. Is a 7 day JR pass the best and most inexpensive way to get from place to place, or should we buy individual tickets?
2. If we buy a JR pass, when should we activate it?

The price of a 7day Jr pass is the same as a return ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto so solely based on that, I think it is not worth buying the JR pass in your case because you are only going one way.
