  • Hi,
The truth is that no full JR pass pays off with your plans. You can save some money by using some regional rail passes.

BTW I hope you're aware there is no rail access to Shirakawago, so you'll need to pay for a bus (or use a regional pass that covers it). Also after the Alpine route, you'll need to pay for a bus to get to Nagano (rail would be extremely circuitous and time consuming).
  • Hi Tenjin, thank you so much for your reply :)
as per your advise, I will not buy JRP. Do you think it will be effective if I change my itinerary from Day 4 as below :

    D4 - 19Apr : Kyoto - Kanazawa - Toyama
    D5 - 20Apr : Toyama - Alpine Road - Shirakawago - Nagano (is it possible? )
    D6 - 21Apr : Nagano - Tokyo
    D7 - 22Apr : Tokyo - Kawaguchiko/Mt Fuji - Gotemba - Tokyo
    D8 - 23Apr : Tokyo : Shinjuku, Shibuya, Odaiba
    D9 - 24Apr : Tokyo : Showa Kinen Park
    D10-25Apr : Haneda departure

And for the Pass i will buy Hokuriku Arch Pass to be used on D1- D6, with additional bus ticket for Shirakawago. And for D7-D9 : Tokyo Wide Pass.
Looking forward for your suggestion..Many Thanks before
  • Hi,
I think there is no realistic way to do what you plan on Apr 20. And if you look at the map on
    http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7551.html
I can't understand also the order that you want to do them. It looks like a zigzag with lots of backtracking.

    Hallo Tenjin,
Thank you for reply and sorry to make you confused.
i'm just thinking if i could use JR Kansai Area Pass (4Days) + JR HOKURIKU Area Pass (until D5 Kanazawa-Toyama) with itinerary as below and as per your advised on 20Apr i also have amended :

    D4 - 19Apr : Kyoto - Kanazawa - Shirakawago - Kanazawa
    D5 - 20Apr : Kanazawa - Tateyama - Alpine Road - Nagano
    D6 - 21Apr : Nagano - Tokyo
    D7 - 22Apr : Tokyo - Kawaguchiko/Mt Fuji - Gotemba - Tokyo
    D8 - 23Apr : Tokyo : Shinjuku, Shibuya, Odaiba
    D9 - 24Apr : Tokyo : Showa Kinen Park
    D10-25Apr : Haneda departure

Please let me know what your thought, which pass that i should buy from Day1 - Day6 to make my trip more effective.
    Thanks again Tenjin!
  • Hi,
Well first, as another person already asked me, it would be fairly difficult to make a Kansai Area Pass pay off without some long distance travel. If you're just going between the main cities, it'd be nearly impossible to make it worthwhile. If you go to Himeji for a day, then a one day Kansai Area Pass would pay off. But overall for several days you'd need more long distance travel to be worth it. I suggest that you look at a Icoca & Haruka discount ticket.

It's questionable if you'd save anything with the JR Hokuriku Area Pass though. You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

    There is more info on

In any event, the difference is probably not that much.
There is also the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass but currently the sale is only up to Nov. 9th. If it's extended though it also might help. Since you're not leaving soon, I suggest you wait til Feb or March before buying anything. Many exchange orders have expiration dates anyway, so you shouldn't be buying passes now anyway.
  • Hi Tenjin!
Thank you so much for your suggestion and guidance for my trip. I will try to calculate thru Hyperdia which one is the best way before I purchase any passes. Noted also for Kansai Area Pass, I will not buy this one. Have a nice day to you and really appreciated for your help!
