Hi - I have planned to travel using my JRpass from Osaka to Takayama(2n), then Kanazawa(3n) then on to Tokyo.
some posts seem to suggest that it would be better to switch the order and go to Kanazawa first.
Its not clear from the timetables - any suggestions?

You could do it either way, and there are reasons you can give for both. Going to Kanazawa from Osaka is faster than Osaka to Takayama. But going from Kanazawa to Takayama is a bit tricky - if you are lucky with your train connections, you can get there in about 2 hours, but otherwise it'll take you about 3. The alternative is a bus from Kanazawa that you'd need to pay for, and it takes about 2 hours. It does go through Shirakawago though which is the highlight of the area.
Conversely if you go by way of Nagoya to Takayama first, you can in the end take the bullet train all the way from Kanazawa to Tokyo, which is very smooth and quick.
In the end, it's up to you.
