Rail pass question/Itinerary advice

Hello all. I'll be visiting Japan for the first time this coming December for 11 days(21st-31st).

My route will be Chiba -> Kanagawa -> Tokyo. My current plan is to spend 4 days in Chiba, 3 at Kanagawa and 4 in Tokyo. There is no strict plan or itinerary I'm following as I intend to explore the area at my own pace. That being said, I would appreciate any suggestions for places to visit/things to do while in Chiba/Kanagawa since I've more or less figured out what I want to do in Tokyo.

I might be a little random and board and alight at random stations while exploring the area and I figure it might be something I'll be doing a lot while I'm there so knowing that, I would like to ask if the JR Pass will be worth it if I intend to travel along those areas and also if there are any other passes worthwhile for me to get.

Thank you all in advance. :)

  • Dear Kireas,

Thank you very much for contacting us.

Kanagawa Prefecture is located just south of Tokyo. Its prefectural capital is Yokohama. Kanagawa Prefecture is home to Kamakura and Hakone. Kamakura is famous for its historic treasures such as its large bronze Buddha statue. Hakone is very popular for its natural beauty and the view of nearby Mt. Fuji. So, as you can see, there are lots to see in the Kanagawa region. For futher information, please click here: http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1215.html

Regarding the JR Pass, It will not be worth buying one because you will not be traveling far from Tokyo. Single tickets will be very affordable. You can have a look at the prices here: www.hyperdia.com. This website can be a little daunting at first so we have made tutorial video to show you how to use it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzI3Fx3s-pg

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Hi,
A JR Pass for only staying in the Kanto area would be a horrible waste. If you are only traveling around that area, a Kanto Area Pass would be far better for you.

It's good for 3 consecutive days, and you could even use it on the bullet train to go to popular places like Karuizawa and Kusatsu. You could in fact break even on it in just one day, and save about $200 total used for travel to the farthest destinations. If you're interested in going to Hakone or the Fuji 5 Lakes area though, then one of the Odakyu passes will serve you better.

For within Tokyo, a 3 day subway day pass is a great way to save.

Going to Kamakura/Enoshima has been mentioned as one place to see, in addition you also might look at Nikko as well as Izu, and in the Boso Peninsula (Chiba) there is Nokogiriyama.
Be aware also that around Dec 27 onward some places will close down for New Year's, so check and make sure the place will be open before heading out.
