8 days in Japan

I will arrive Tokyo on 22 Jul Narita airport and fly back to Melbourne on 29 Jul from Narita airport as well.
My iternery plan is 22-24 Tokyo and then 25-27 Osaka then back to Tokyo 28.
1. Is JR 7 days Pass worth for me?
2. Which area should I stay in Tokyo that make me easy to take the bullet train to Osaka?
3. From Osaka can I make a day trip to Kyoto?
4. For JR 7 days pass, should I activate at first day or second day which I will arrive at Narita airport at 4pm.?
5. For JR 7 days pass can I use it with N'EX' train?
6. Do I need to buy PASMO card?

  • Hi,
    1) With at least one trip from Narita into Tokyo on the N'Ex, plus with the round trip to Kansai and back, a 7 day pass does pay off.
    2) You'd board the train for Osaka at either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, so near there is ideal. But it is not hard to go to either station, so find a hotel nearby any rail station that fits your budget.
3)Yes. Easily - takes about 30 minutes. If you can, you should also put in at least half a day to see Nara, which has some of Japan's best sights.
    4) Your choice. You can take the N'Ex only once with your plans. For the other way, the cheapest way is the 1000 yen bus.

    5) Yes, as said.
    6) Not really. Any IC card is convenient, but won't save you anything. If you'll be traveling all over, then a 2 or 3 day subway day pass can save you some money.

In Osaka you can also use the JR Pass on the Loop Line, which goes to several good areas. Visiting Dotonbori at night is a must. Also the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.

  • Thank you so much Tenjin.
I went to hyperdia website to search how to ride the train using the pass which they show "LTD. EXP NARITA EXPRESS". And the question is can I use JR Pass to catch that train? Thank you you make me more confident.
  • Yes you certainly can. You do need seat reservations for it, but they are free for any train with the pass too.
  • Thank you for your help Tenjin san. Can I inbox to you directly next time for some information?
