Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka - Hakone - Fuji - Toyko

Hi I would like to know what is the best way to travel for my trip. Will start from Narita and end at Narita.

I will be at Kyoto/Osaka region for about 5 days. Would getting the 7day JR pass be the best option? Planning to activate it on the day I leave Tokyo for Kyoto, so that I can use it on the return trip to Odawara before proceeding to Hakone.

Planning to get Fuji Hakone pass. Can this round trip pass be used from Odawara onwards to Hakone or must I use it from Shinjuku?

Also would it be useful to get a Pasmo card? Can it be used in Kyoto/Osaka? Would Pasmo be the hassle free way to travel around in Tokyo?

Thanks

  • If you get the 7 day JR Pass, and go from Tokyo to Kansai and back, plus use the Narita Express train at least once, you do get your money's worth. If you're in Japan longer than 7 days and can't use the pass round trip on the Narita Express, one cheaper alternative is the ¥1000 yen bus.

For the Fuji Hakone Pass, you can start at either. Complete info is at:

Note that there is no savings from using one. It's just more convenient. If you want to save some money in Tokyo, if you'll be going around enough then a 2-3 day subway pass can save some good money.

Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful. Instead, use that day time and be sure to see Nara - it has some of Japan's best sights. Taking at least half a day and going to Himeji with Japan's finest castle is well worth it, and would add more savings to your pass.

  • Thanks. The access Narita looks like a cheap and good way to get from Narita to Tokyo.

Will be in Japan longer than 7 days though. If I do not get the 7 day JR pass, what other options are there to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto and back to Odawara?
  • You can be in Japan for more than 7 days - the question is if you will go down to Kansai and return within 7 days. If so, you can almost make a 7 day pass pay off.
A 14 day pass wouldn't pay off unless you added more travel, like a day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima (which would be worthwhile).
