Hi there, I will be landing at Narita airport on 3rd of march at 3:00 pm and travelling japan between 3rd of march till 15th and flying back on 16th march from Narita airport T2 at 11:00 am. please suggest me how to plan and which pass/passes to buy to cover all of my trips and entry ticket to place of interest with the costs please.

my possible itinerary is as follows:

3rd march -
arrive at Narita and travel to Tokyo, hotel and city tour.( buy separate pass or use jr pass!)

4th-7th march -

day trips around Tokyo ( Fuji,Hakone,Kanazawa, shinzuku,takayama,nikko,tsukiji fish market,asakusa,kamakura,enoshima,odawara,yokohama,Kawagoe,kawaguchiko,kusatsu onsen,mt takao etc.)
leave Tokyo in the evening of 7th or early morning of 8th for Kyoto or Hiroshima which ever appropriate.

I don't know how many of those can be done in that limited time frame please suggest if there is room for any other places or to miss out the few places from the list!

8th-14th march

spend around Kyoto & Hiroshima/Miyajima
leave for tokyo either 14th in evening or 15th next day morning and spend day and night in Tokyo and fly out of Narita on 16th at 11:00 am.

please also suggest the places around Kyoto and Hiroshima and travel arrangements around them.

Thank you very much in advance.

  • Hi,
First off, your plans are completely unrealistic.

You could do Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes, Kamakura/Enoshima, Takao, Kusatsu, Yokohama, Kawagoe, and Nikko as day trips (though Nikko ideally would be two) - but that's 8 days of trips for your 4 days in the area - so you're going to have to give up on half of all that. Takayama is 4½ hours from Tokyo by train, so a day trip is simply impossible.

What you could do is use a 14 day pass and along the way, go see Kusatsu and Kanazawa, plus Takayama if you want. That would leave you about 4 days for Kansai and Hiroshima/Miyajima - rather thin. Or give up on Kusatsu and Takayama, which would give you 6 days, which is decent.
As long as you are going from Tokyo and visiting Kansai and Hiroshima, you would make a 14 day pass pay off. Anything more is icing on the cake and giving more savings.

You can see both Hiroshima and Miyajima as a day trip with an early morning start. You can cover the Peace Park/Museum, castle, Shukkeien Garden and Okonomiyaki-mura, and then go down to take the JR ferry to the island. Aside from the Itsukushima Shrine with the giant "floating" torii, the Daishoin Temple is also a must-see place. There are several other pagodas and temples, and climbing Mt. Misen offers a fantastic view over the island and whole area.

If you have time, just a bit past Miyajima is Iwakuni with its iconic historical bridge and mountaintop castle.

Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

I also suggest you take at least half a day and see Nara - it was also a former capital and has some of Japan's best sights. Missing the Todaiji Great Buddha would be a tragedy. Nara Park has a lot of other great places, such as Kasuga Shrine, Kofukuji Temple, the Isuien and Yoshikien Gardens, and feeding the many deer in the area.

If I were you, I'd allocate about 3-4 full days for Tokyo, about 3 days for Tokyo day trips, and the rest for Kansai, Hiroshima, and the Hokuriku area if you want. In the end it's all up to your interests though.

If you want to use a Tokyo subway, you might consider a 2 or 3 day subway pass.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box if on a JR Pass since you can't ride that train using the pass.
