JR Pass 7 or 14 days

Hello

We are traveling to Japan from the 12th October to the 22nd October 2018. We are 8 adults and 2 kids below 3 years old travelling together

Our itenary as follows

12th October - we arrive in Tokyo aroubt 9:30 pm
What mode of transport do we use to travel to our hotel - Hotel Metropolitan??

13th to 16th Explore Tokyo which includes day trip to Mt Fuji lake Ashi, one day at Disney sea. 6 people out of the 8 won't be coming to Disney sea what are the other attractions they can see other than museums? one day we have a look at all the shrines etc. Is it a good idea to take tours?

16th October we travel to Tokyo by train
Any suggestions of attractions we can stop at on our way to Tokyo??

16th to 20th Kyoto explore the place haven't put together an itenarybyet. What are your suggestions to see with kids and senior citizens?

20th travel to Osaka

20th to 22nd we explore Osaka
Any suggestions to see for such short time?
Is there a lot to see in Osaka?

We are not interested in muesuem.as it would be difficult with two active kids and senior citizens as well.
Eagerly waiting for your reply.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,
It's very hard to tell if you are giving your whole itinerary or not. Are you returning to Tokyo after Osaka?
Actually, either way you still don't make a rail pass pay off. With the 7 day pass you'd be close, and you'd break even if you are taking the Narita Express just once. But you didn't say what airport you are landing at.
In any case, for your Tokyo hotel, there is a Hotel Metropolitan near Ikebukuro Stn. If that is where you are going, then you can go to any Yamanote Line Stn which loops the city, and you can get there easily that way.

Tokyo has tons of places to explore. It all depends on your interests. The biggest temples and shrines are the Sensoji Temple at Asakusa and the Meiji Shrine on the city's west side. There are many beautiful historic traditional gardens to see as well, some going back centuries.

Plus there are many places for great city views. The Sky Tree and Roppongi HIlls are perhaps the most famous, but also quite pricey. There are many others, even a lot that are free.

Since you are already seeing Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. After the temples of Kyoto close down around 5 PM, you can zip over to Osaka for the evening. At night the city comes alive and has some great places to see, such as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg and Abeno Harukas Bldg are wonderful.
On another evening, you could also go and see Kobe.

Instead, I suggest you take at least half a day and see Nara - it was also a former capital and has some of Japan's best sights. Missing the Todaiji Great Buddha would be a tragedy. Nara Park has a lot of other great places, such as Kasuga Shrine, Kofukuji Temple, the Isuien and Yoshikien Gardens, and feeding the many deer in the area.

Kyoto has mostly temples and shrines, but if you want things for kids, there is some of that as well. There is a big railway museum they might like, plus the Toei Eigamura is part movie studio and part theme park. The Iwatayama Monkey Park might be fun as well, although it does take a 20 minute hike up a hill to get to. Plus the Fushimi Inari Shrine could keep you busy for a few hours, going through all the torii "tunnels".

And if you go to the Kansai area, seeing Himeji is another option. There is Japan's finest surviving original castle, plus the Kokoen Garden near it is just exquisite.

Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box if on a full JR Pass since you can't ride that train using the pass.

  • Thank you for your feedback really appreciate it.

Just wondering if we take the Yamanote Line STN would we need a JRP or do we need to get another rail ticket?

When do we set the date to activate our JRP? We have ordered a 7 day pass already.

We will be arriving in Tokyo and exiting from Osaka back to Australia.

If we would.like to have a look at some of the gardens can we use a wheelchaie for some senior citizens? Please advice.

What about booking tours to lake Ashi Mt Fuji etc. Are they worth it? Can we book when we get to Japan?

How easy is to take trains to different destinations rather than booking tours? Please advise.

Most of the tours have an early start with 8 people on board I m just trying to think K which is a better option.
