Japan trip June 6-16, is JR my best option?

Hi, thanks for your help. I arrive with my family to Tokyo June 6 and this is our itinerary:

Tokyo: June 6-10
Fuji: June 10-12
Osaka: June 12-16

From Osaka we plan to visit: Kyoto for a day; Kobe and Nara for a day each.

Is the JR 14 day pass the best option for us within Tokyo and the rest of the route/itinerary? Also, as we visit the other cities with Osaka as our headquarters can we use the JR to visit these?

Thanks again.

John

  • A 14-day pass would not pay off for your plans. And is the above your full plans? Are you returning to Tokyo afterward? If you use a 7-day pass for June 10-16 and return to Tokyo on the 16th, a 7-day pass would pay off. If you are leaving Japan from Osaka, then no JR Pass would pay off for you.
Also you need to clarify where near Fuji you will go. Most people choose either the Fuji 5 Lakes area or the Hakone area. But if you are putting in 2-3 days there, you could see both. There is a regional pass you could use.

Plus if you are already seeing Tokyo, you can mostly skip Osaka during the day. Osaka in the evening though is a great time to see the place, especially Dotonbori, Shinsekai, and the city night views (Umeda Sky Bldg, Abeno Harukas, Cosmo Tower).
I suggest you take a day and go see Himeji, with Japan's best surviving castle and beautiful Kokoen Garden.

You could see them in half a day, and if you wish, you could also see some of Kobe for half a day. A one day Kansai Area Pass would save you some money.

Spending just one day in Kyoto is seriously shortchanging the place. Nara is definitely worth seeing, but most of the best is in the Nara Park area, which you could see in half a day. The Todaiji Temple is the must-see place above all else.

  • Thank you very much. I have an idea on renting a car out of Osaka and hitting the surrounding area, can I ask it here or should I open a different question/request? Thanks again.

  • You opened the thread, so you sure could ask it here. But renting a car only makes sense if 1) you're up to driving in Japan in the first place, and 2) you want to go to places that are poorly served by public transportation, or not served at all. Going to the mountains and countryside can be done very well with a car (especially weekdays), but in cities parking can be expensive, and fuel is not cheap.
