Thank you. We are visiting family in Mito so not sure we can do it all in 7 days. Unless we do Tokyo to Kyoto first and then Mito in the middle and spend the rest of the time in Tokyo but still was planning on spending 3 or 4 days in Kyoto and at least 7 days in Mito with family. Would it still be worth it to get the 7 day pass for the train rides not including the final one back to Tokyo from Mito?
If you are thinking of only going from Tokyo to Kyoto round trip for within a week, the japanican ticket is a much better, faster and cheaper way. https://www.japanican.com/en/tour/detail/PAS1J02031MKC/ You can even ride the Nozomi trains with it, getting you there 30 minutes sooner.
Actually, if you could add half a day to see Nara Park in Nara it would be well worth it. https://goo.gl/LfvWnL And you could if you want see Osaka in the evening - it has a wild night life. http://goo.gl/XE5R94 Even paying for regular tickets for those, the japanican ticket still comes out cheaper and a good deal.
You can check on train info on Hyperdia - you can see regular fares, routes, and schedules. http://www.hyperdia.com Under "More Options", with a full JR pass, be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the JR pass.
