Hi,

We are planning to visit Japan in March. We land in KIX airport in the morning and plan on exploring Osaka the rest of the day. In the evening we plan on going to Kyoto for two nights and head to Tokyo for 6 nights. We will be departing from Tokyo to the States. Do you have any suggestions on train tickets? We're not sure which is the best option.

With a one way plan like yours, no JR Pass would pay off for you. If you are going from KIX to the northern part of Osaka, then the Icoca & Haruka discount ticket would work for you.

If going to southern Osaka though, then the Nankai tickets would likely be better.

The Icoca card is an IC card that is very convenient though there is no real savings in it. You can also use it in Tokyo, but not refund any balance in Tokyo.

You can simply purchase a ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo (or your final station destination) in Kyoto Station.
