Hi ! We are planning to travel from Hiroshima to The 5 lakes area and/or to Hakone- in 1 day - I understand that the JR doesn't cover all those areas.. could you suggest me please how to travel - the Jr map is quite confusing! Many thanks
The fastest you could get from Hiroshima to Mishima Station would be about 3¾ hours, and that is using the Nozomi train part of the way. Then add another 50 minute bus ride to see Hakone. To go to the Fuji 5 Lakes would take even longer. If you left at dawn, you'd still have very little time to see the area.
I suggest you consider another destination - there are many good places in the area, including Onomichi, Miyajima, Iwakuni, Kurashiki, Okayama, Kotohira, and Takamatsu. https://www.youtube.com/user/thejapanfaq/videos
Thank you all for your help - maybe I wasn't clear - i thought to Travel from Hiroshima - to Hakone or to the 5 lakes and stay there the night so to be able to visit it the next day. My question was how to reach either of those places with my JRpass and what ticket do I have to get in addition? I hope it makes more senese... thanks Didi
Just keep in mind that you will be travelling via Osaka (use indications "from Osaka"). JR Pass user needs to transfer at Shin-Osaka anyway, so the first leg of your trip should be a Sakura service from Hiroshima.

Are you aware that it will take most of your day just to do the round trip?
