My itinerary for Japan is as follows:
1. Tokyo (6nights) with day trips by train to Nikko,Kamakura, and Hakone
2. train to Takayama (1night)
3. train to Kanazawa (2nights)
4. train to Kyoto (4nights)
5. train to Kinosaki (1night)
6. train to Nara (1night)
7. train to Kobe (5nights) with day trips to Hiroshima,Osaka, and Himeji
We arrive in Tokyo and depart from Osaka. I'm planning to purchase a 21day pass. Is it worth it in terms of cost and convenience? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

If I can only do 2 day trips, would you recommend Kamakura or Nikko;I think I would definitely want to go to Hakone. I'm also considering getting a Pasmo pass; can both my husband and I use the same card or do we have to get one each?
It's totally up to your preferences - both are very good sights and it also depends on when you go. I suggest you look through:

Nikko has a lot more variety and nature in addition to its temples/shrines. The Toshogu Shrine is very highly rated, but part of it is under renovation so that might be a big factor for you if you ever want to return to see Japan again some day. Kamakura is much closer, was a former capital for a time, and you can go walk on the beach and see Enoshima too. You could even stop at Yokohama for a bit if you wanted (not sure if the pass you'd use allows it but, anyway) there are some good places there too like the beautiful Sankeien Garden.
