Hi there, we are a family of 6 visiting Japan for the first time. We will arrive at Narita airport on 31 July, staying at Shinjuku, leave for Kyoto on 3 Aug, then on to Osaka on 6 Aug., returning home from Osaka on 8 Aug. What would be the best way to travel around and which is the best pass to purchase including bullet train to Kyoto ? Thanks.

Nothing beats the rails to get around the major urban sprawls of Tokyo and Osaka. Kyoto may require you to look into the bus system, though it may prove challenging for a group of six. Probably best to hire a cab at some point.
From the looks of it, you need not purchase any pass for your current travel itinerary. You need to be aware, though, that travel expenses can really add up.

You can get 1 day of free local transport, and for rest, since most Kansai passes don't pay off without a lot of travel, just buy regular tickets.
